Portrait of a Woman, Mixed Media Folk Art Painting...

As I continue studying art history, I will be painting as I go and posting the inspiration piece if possible. My purpose is not to copy the paintings from the great masters, but to learn from their technique, history, and passion. I will be adding my own touches, and changing elements in my interpretation as a mixed media Folk Art piece. My newest painting "Portrait of a Woman,with Bird", was inspired by "Head of a Mulatto Woman" by Joanna Mary (Boyce) Wells, 1861,shown below. Mixed Media Saint on Vintage Drawer Front....SOLD

I have a few drawer fronts from a vintage dresser that I've been wanting to paint, and this is the first piece. Mixed media,layers of paint,torn paper,and I added a decorative trim moulding with a pretty carving to the top and bottom. Willow...SOLD

I love willow trees! I'm hoping to plant one this year, maybe two :) Anyway, this is my newest mixed media painting. Full of yummy texture, bits of paper as the leaves, protected with artist grade sealer, 16 x 20 stretched canvas. My plan was to create a quick, simple landscape painting. But, I had to keep adding texture, layering paint, and decided to tear tiny bits of paper for the leaves (which pretty much rendered my hands useless for the rest of the day,lol!) Portrait of a Creole Woman...SOLD

I am currently studying Western Art History and Figure Studies, concentrating on Renaissance and Folk Art. I love to combine these two styles in my work. I will be painting as I study and research these areas of art, and posting new work as they are completed, along with the painting that ispired the piece if available. Sometimes my paintings will look very similar to the ispiration piece, or not at all....sometimes a painting will spark an idea for whatever reason. This is a learning process for me, and I thought I would share it with my followers who love art as much as I do!

Things are really starting to get busy this holiday season! I can't believe there are only 22 days until Christmas....(thanks Ebay, for the daily countdown reminder, I panic a little every time I see it). I have given myself a deadline for getting my paintings finished and listed in time for gift giving. I'm going to include a few larger 16 x 20 pieces in my listings leading up to the Christmas shipping deadline. So, here is my latest painting in an altar screen design.
